Lot 4671
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 3.03 g, 6 h), Rome, 316-317. IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI / R S Sol, wearing long robe and chlamys, standing front, head to left, raising his right hand in salute and holding globe in his left. RIC -. Apparently unpublished with this very unusual rendering of Sol. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die and with a thin flan crack, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This extremely rare piece shows a fully clothed Sol with chlamys. Such a depiction can also be found on earlier coins such as RIC 73 (Nicomedia) from 311, but this is the only instance known from the post-313 reform coinage.
